COVID-19 Announcement

All ASPIRE Sessions to proceed as normal.

ASPIRE has been closely following updates for COVID-19 and it's affect in Alberta, most importantly, Edmonton.

We have made efforts to ensure that our facility and our services were safe for our athletes and coaches and everyone's families during the COVID-19 outbreak.

However in the last 24 hours recent events have transpired:
  • Student attendance at K to 12 schools is prohibited and in-person post-secondary classes are cancelled.
  • All licensed child care facilities, out-of-school care programs and preschool programs are closed indefinitely.
Given this new information, we believe that it is in the best interest to our athletes, coaches and the public to post pone all ASPIRE activities until further notice as of March 16th, 2020.

The WHO and CDC has labeled COVID-19 as a global pandemic. We believe that by closing our facility, we can help the public health authorities in Canada gain control of the spread of the virus and “flatten the curve” to make the pandemic more manageable.

We thank you for your understanding and patience during this difficult time.

Preventing further spread

In order to assist with containing the spread of the Novel coronavirus, we encourage the following:

  • Take the COVID 19 Self Assessment
  • Stay home if you feel unwell - self isolate - Call 811 immediately before leaving your home.
  • Frequently wash your hands
  • Regularly and thoroughly clean your hands with SOAP & WATER.  If soap & water are not an option, an alcohol-based hand sanitizer may be used.
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
  • Practice respiratory hygiene
  • Follow good respiratory hygiene; cover your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze (dispose of the used tissue immediately).
  • Keep at least 1 metre distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing.
  • If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical care early

If you have COVID-19 symptoms and have travelled outside Canada or were exposed to someone who has COVID-19, stay home and call Health Link 811 for instructions.
Do not go to a health care facility without consulting 811 first. If you need immediate medical attention, call 911 and inform them that you may have COVID-19.

In the event that participants become diagnosed with the Novel coronavirus and have attended an ASPIRE event within 21 days of symptoms showing, we ask that you notify us to allow for the most up-to-date and accurate information to be provided to the health authorities.

We will continue to monitor the information on COVID-19 and will contact you with any updates as they occur.

For questions or concerns surrounding this policy, or to report a diagnosis, please contact us at aspirevolleyball@shaw.ca.

  • The first rule of sports (and all) parenting: Don’t speak Link to Article: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/parenting/wp/2017/02/28/the-first-rule-of-sports-and-all-parenting-dont-speak/?utm_term=.95f1007b2caeYour child doesn’t have to play in the Super Bowl for you to know the feeling. Their team was supposed to win and then they didn’t. What do you do? Being the mother of two girls who played soccer and ran track, I thought I knew the answer: Talk it through. Tell them you love them. Say it’s just a game. Remind them there’s always a next time. Isn’t that what good parenting is all about? Keeping channels of communication open even in tough moments?Turns out the answer ...

  • Volleyball Ankle Braces- Opinions from Sports Medicine Experts What side of the net do sports medicine experts land on when discussing volleyball ankle braces? There little doubt that ankle sprains are the most common acute injury in indoor volleyball.Photo courtesy of USA VolleyballThe debate begins when recommending for or against the use of volleyball ankle braces.I’m going to review this subject by first listing some studies about volleyball ankle braces. More importantly, I will tap the awesome collective wisdom of my USA Volleyball Sports Medicine colleagues Aaron Brock, ATC and Jill Wosmek, ATC. Aaron works with Men’s National Teams and Jill was with the Women’s National Team for two Olympic cycles.I am not going to review ankle taping, since many athletes ...

  • Why volleyball -- not basketball -- is winning the popular vote Link to Article: http://www.espn.com/espnw/sports/article/18659764/why-young-athletes-flocking-volleyball-not-basketball-record-numbersBasketball figured to be the game for Micaya White. Her dad, Randy White, played in the NBA. Her brother, R.J., is the starting center for UNC Greensboro. Micaya joined her first team when she was 6."Everybody assumed I was going to play too," the 6-foot-1 White said. There was just one problem. She didn't love it."When I tried to show aggression, I'd end up hurting another player or fouling out of the game." More than that, White cringed, "I hated being touched. I'm a germ freak, so a sweaty person touching me ...
